simple patio updates & a giveaway

Good morning, friends!

Thank you all for your kind comments regarding our trip–we are home and getting back in the swing of things now.  I’ll share more on that soon, but I had to pop in today to show you some things I worked on yesterday.

kirkland's giveaway at perfectly imperfect

Here is our back patio.  It’s a lovely spot, but we’ve never found much time to decorate it. Until recently, this porch was covered in toys and random kid stuff.  We finally got around to cleaning it, and that’s when my creative juices started flowing…it was time to spruce up the area.

When I got an email from Kirkland’s, I knew it was the perfect time for a shopping trip to update our patio.

kirkland's giveaway at perfectly imperfect

We’re not finished yet, but we came a long way baby yesterday.  I stopped in at Kirkland’s last weekend to pick up some outdoor accents to compliment our existing furniture.

Isn’t it so much fresher??  I absolutely love the herb pots (my favorite purchase that day) holding some kitchen herbs–lavender, spicy basil, stevia, and dill.  After seeing how beautiful and functional the pots are hanging on our wall, I may have to pick up a few more at Kirkland’s.

Plus, I love any little pot complete with chalkboard label.

I picked up these cushions at Lowes last week, as ours were about 5 years overdue a tossing.

I’m also in love with all the glass accents I picked up at Kirkland’s–I’ve always been drawn to hourglasses and I all but ran to snag this one.  The luminary lanterns are gorgeous, too. I picked up 3 of those and filled them with corks.

You guys know I’m a sucker for baskets, so I was thrilled to pick up this beauty to use as a centerpiece.

While we’re not finished updating the patio yet, the difference is truly amazing.

Especially since it took all of an hour and a half to pull together.

I’ve got some great news for you guys, too!  Kirkland’s is giving one of our lucky readers a $150 Gift Card today!

To enter to win the giveaway (closing Saturday at midnight), simply leave a comment on the post telling us what you like about our patio updates or what you would use the gift card for!

P.S.  For an extra entry, share this giveaway on Facebook, Twitter, or your blog–leave yourself a separate comment for each!

Good luck and here’s to a happy, outdoors-y kind of summer!

I love the comfortable feeling the porch showcases. It seems to say welcome, come have a seat, let’s talk and catch up.
I would use the gift card to purchase items for our new home. My husband recently completed a teachers masters program, he just finished his first year of teaching high school science. Our youngest graduates from high school next weekend, he has enlisted in the Navy. So we are moving closer to my husband’s job and downsizing. His commute will go from 45 minutes to 7 minutes. Mine will increase, but that is ok. Enough of my ramblings. The house we intend to purchase has an outdoor deck and sun room that I want to create that warm, welcome, come have a seat feeling.

  15. chasity May 31, 2012 at 7:54 am #

I love that particular color green- it’s one of my favorite colors. I like the little herb pots, too, but I have the un-greenest thumb on the planet. I’m moving in 2 weeks, so I would put the gift card to very good use personalizing and warming up the new place..

I’m debating on whether to paint my teak rockers (which are weathered) or try to re-stain them. Ohhh the decisions! :)

Hands down, I would say the way you transformed an otherwise dull patio has my wheels turning at full speed! The groovy green cushions paired with fresh accent pieces really makes a world of difference. My favorite would have to be the jar filled with corks. So glad there is a kirklands in my area :)

  55. Tammy May 31, 2012 at 9:51 am #

Oh! What fun! After seeing what you did I think I would re-do my screen porch. This year I did not get any of my old porch decorations out because when I saw them in early spring they just were not doing it for me anymore. I think they went and got old over the winter. I LOVE those chalk pots so I’d definitely get a few of those.

My style is like Dearlillie. I don’t use much color. But outside seems to need a little something.. Thanks!! I love Kirklands!

I LOVE the herb pots. Thanks for the giveaway!!

  66. Brooke Smith May 31, 2012 at 10:19 am #

Hi, Shaunna. I love what you guys did with your patio! We don’t have a patio, but a deck that my husband, 3 yo daughter, and I built last Memorial Day. It’s been a year now, and the only thing all that “beautiful” aside from the deck itself are the herbs and potted plants that are positioned around bench seats we built in. I would love some decor items like your curvy glass pieces and bright green cushions to spruce up the beautiful deck and hum-drum furniture. Love your blog! Thanks!

  67. Susan Cox May 31, 2012 at 10:20 am #

I would definitely buy the her pots and some glassware!
    Thanks.

  68. Andrea May 31, 2012 at 10:23 am #

I love the herb pots with the chalkboard above it. Every little thing you add to your home is always so cute and has such a “homey” feeling. Thanks for the chance at the giveaway!

I just love the combination of different natural elements – the white wood planter, the metal herb pots, the glass bottles and table, the wicker basket… add fabric in it and you’ve got the perfect space! Your patio is looking wonderful! You are such an inspiration.
We are about to start updating our master bedroom/bathroom (always the last space to complete!) and Kirkland’s would be invaluable to that process! Take care!

  97. Sorita May 31, 2012 at 12:30 pm #

I love the cushions. Such a great pop of color. I also love Kirkland’s. I was just there on Monday and picked up some cute little end tables. Great place to shop for any reason.

  99. Lisa May 31, 2012 at 12:32 pm #

I’d totally get me some of those pots hanging on the wall! I love the green that you’ve chosen too. It reminds me of the color green that is used in the Dr. Seuss books, which I’ve been loathing over for quite some time (crazy how I relate decorating to Dr. Seuss books, I know…kids do that to you:) ) Beautiful patio!

  100. Chelsea May 31, 2012 at 12:38 pm #

Oh man, love those herb pots, and the hourglass. Would love the gift card to buy those things! Your patio looks beautiful!

  104. Crys May 31, 2012 at 1:46 pm #

Holy heck on a stick!!!! I love all of it, dang it. I’m digging on the juicy green cushsions oh-so-very-much. I’m absolutely, positively ga-ga for the chalkboard pots and labels hanging from the walls. What a brilliant way to hang herbs. Gorg-gorg-gorg!!! Could I be any more enthusiastic?! I am so inspired right now. I need some patio-love from Kirkland to spruce up my front porch. It’s looking absymmal (especially since that’s where I paint and I have a several gallons of paint and splotches of whoopsies on the steps where I dribbed paint.)

  105. Crys May 31, 2012 at 1:55 pm #

I love your patio! What a difference a trip to Kirkland’s makes! Lime green seems to be one of the colors I’m gravitating toward lately. It’s just so fresh and screams summer. Those darlin’ little herb pots are perfect for snipping your favorite seasoning to add to supper. Plus, I bet they smell lovely when the breeze blows through. I have a pot of basil on my patio. One of my favorite smells!
    Shaunna,
Even though it’s not finished, it’s beautiful. You’ve inspired me to add a little love to my functional but boring patio. Definitely need to trash my chair cushions. Maybe I can talk the hubby into making a run to Lowe’s today.
Thanks for the lovely photos and the inspiration.

I would love to buy an outdoor rug for our deck which we just finished re-staining. It is in rough shape and we thought the stain would be enough to hide it but a rug would help even more! :) Thanks for the chance!

  234. Rosann June 1, 2012 at 10:47 am #

Beautiful as always with everything you do. I too would use my winnings for decor. Been working on our patio as well.

  235. Debbie Mason June 1, 2012 at 11:06 am #

What a difference and bit of color makes! I’m as sucker for glass too, so I love the hourglass and the lanterns. I’m a regular at my local Kirklands and they have so many things I’d love to have in my home. Thanks for the opportunity to win. Have a great weekend.

  236. Sarah Carel June 1, 2012 at 11:21 am #

Our 18 mo son is finally getting his own room, and really needs some accent pieces…Kirklands would be an amazing place to get them!! :-)

  237. Linda June 1, 2012 at 11:22 am #

    Cheers! Linda

  238. Lisa C. June 1, 2012 at 11:32 am #

I love the glass luminary lanterns! Your porch is beautiful!

  239. Michele June 1, 2012 at 12:08 pm #

I, as many others, love the cushions. The reason I love them, the flowers, and the herb pots, is because prior to adding these the space was very bland. Now it calls you to come sit down, and hear the sounds of summer! If I were to win the gift card I would do some updates on my sunroom. I don’t have a patio space, so this is my summer getaway. Right now it is drab, and could use an update.

  240. Melissa M. June 1, 2012 at 12:10 pm #

I love the herb pots, new green cushions, and the accents you chose (lamps, basket, shells, flower pot, etc.)! I would probably buy a basket, myself, or a few flower-pots and lamps.

  241. Jo Mathis June 1, 2012 at 12:10 pm #

Your patio is gorgeous! I love the glass accents on the tables, and the cork inside them looks very Pottery Barn. My husband and I are about to start working on the patio and I love me some Kirklands!

  242. Leslie W June 1, 2012 at 12:28 pm #

I’d love to be able to update our patio chairs with bright colors. I’d also like to get some hanging baskets for my many petunias that i have. I think they’d look spectacular hanging on either side of my door :)

  243. Jamie McQueen June 1, 2012 at 1:06 pm #

Love the use of herbs as an accent. Multi-purpose decorating is always a plus!

  244. Erin June 1, 2012 at 1:27 pm #

This is the post I needed to see today! I have been looking for ways to spruce up my patio. We have a blank, dull wall with no windows and I was going crazy trying to figure out what to do. (Especially because you can see the boring old thing from the road—corner lot blessings.) I would definitely use the gift card to pick up some of those hanging herb pots! Beautiful and functional! I love the bright color of the flower basket next to the green of the cushions. Beautiful space!

I love the green cushions and how they brought your patio furniture back to life!

  322. Jill Brodbeck June 22, 2012 at 11:04 am #

The colors that were used to accessorize the existing furniture really compliments the entire patio. The ‘earthy’ hues give it a relaxing, yet cheery look. Although the patio is a somewhat small space, it doesn’t look over-cluttered with accessories or furniture and it is a great use of the space. The glass accents are a nice touch and will no doubt look inviting in the evening when lit. This is a great look!

  323. Robin June 25, 2012 at 7:05 am #

love, Love LOVE the pop of green on the chair cushions. I’m needing new ones and would love to add some color at the same time!
