reinventing a ladder, a scale, and a brick wall

A little repurposing never hurt anybody or anything.

Especially not this pretty old ladder.

While I’m sure it misses the days where many a foot rested on it to complete greatness, I’m confident that it will enjoy its lazy days as a magazine/book/vintage linen or letters/anything-else-I-fancy-displaying-on-it holder.

:-)

Oh, how I love some metal bits here and there throughout a home.  Adding these vintage and industrial touches is really beginning to make an impact on this traditional suburban home.

Repurposing great finds is a passion for me.  It takes my home from mediocre to mine.  I enjoy it so much that I’m focusing on reinventing as a huge part of my little shop…that is officially opening today/tomorrow!!

I thought it only fair that you got a little preview here first.  You’ve been with me since the beginning, after all.

I moved in a few items last night with my buddy, Lauren.  We met after closing and got busy ripping down that concrete wall you see back there to expose the lovely brick.

We didn’t get very far.  More on that tomorrow, though.  And don’t worry, I’ll show you more of the french chest of drawers later this week.

After we tore down as much as we could, we cleaned up and started putting a few things on the shelves.  It’s a much bigger space than I had in my head, so I’m really needing to add a few things to it.  Maybe there’s some junking in my near future.

And speaking of junk…this green gem has my heart.  I’ve been looking for a vintage scale for quite some time.  Alas, I’m holding out for more of a blue, so this one is taking up residence in the vault.

It’s got a long way to go before it’s just the way I want it, but with all we have going on getting ready for Honduras (guest posters, I’ll be emailing you the next 2 days), I’m going to make do a little bit and only put things in the space I love.

Speaking of that…I better go and keep painting.  I’ve got quite a bit to finish today.  And if you’re in the Troy/Montgomery/Dothan/Birmingham/lower Alabama area and want to stop by the vault, let me know and I’ll meet ya up there!

:-)

Love the ladder! I am dying for one, but concerned about my wild toddler destroying everything I try to put on it. How do you keep all your nice things out without them getting ruined by the kids? Your kids must be better behaved then mine ;)
Can’t wait to stop by the Vault! I’m planning to come by this summer when my husband is not working so he can watch the babe.

Loving that ladder. I have a shorter old ladder that I’m trying to figure out how to use in my home…maybe painting it! :)

Looking forward to seeing more pics of your shop!

I just start reading your blog in the past few days. I stumbled upon it via another…which isn’t coming to mind at the moment. (Sorry, other blog who very much deserves a shout out!) I ADORE what you do. I love your style and feel very inspired to start slapping chalk paint on everything in my house. Needless to say, I was delighted as I read this post to learn that you are to be found right here in AL. I live in the Bham area, and I am now fully convinced that I need to organize a road trip to the “vault.” Can’t wait to see what treasures it holds.

Nothing better than a brick wall, an old ladder, and a vintage scale! :)

I’m so exited to find that your “Vault” is in Troy, AL!!! I live just twenty minutes south of you on 231. I’m at the beach right now trying to get some things done but will absolutely try to visit soon as I get home!! Where in Troy is the shop located? I’m not sure but you will probably be in Honduras then. Sounds like you will have lots of visitors just from Alabama! You may be sold out by the time I get there. Im so exited for you, I know this adventure will be a great success! What will you name your shop or is it “The Vault”? You know the brick peeking out behind the concrete looks really neat and is a great look that lots of folks try to replicate, so if you don’t get it all down it will still look fabulous. I love that crumbly plaster with brick under it look and the cubbies from the old safety deposit boxes are just wonderful for display. Maybe you could find a couple of old ones to put in there, wouldn’t they be a great item to sell? Take care, VBg

Awesome! Keep up the Great Works!!

Love the ladder too. I have an old red step ladder that was my parents’. For some reason it is just one of those things that gives me fond childhood memories. It’s too big to have inside…will have to find a way to display it outside.

I’ve been searching for a ladder for months and months.. and still havent’ found one. A little envious! It’s beautiful!
