I’m not sure what has gotten into me lately, but it seems I can’t get enough of chalkboards. I’m painting the kids’ furniture with it, gifting it, and I’m pretty sure there are 3 different types in our kitchen/entry area.
So when I noticed a big, blank, blah side of our island, what do you think I did?
We added a chalkboard, of course.
For the life of me, I can’t find the tutorial shots I took, but hey…you guys know how to craft something together.
Board, empty frame, wood glue, chalkboard paint.
No crazy-hard steps.
And I’ll be honest, Matt cut the board for me. I painted and glazed the frame, and he hung it from the inside, attaching it with screws, so that little hands can’t pull it down. The kids are loving it!! And I love that it’s the perfect distraction for them while I’m cooking dinner.
🙂
Because I wanted to work with what I had, I used a piece of red oak we had leftover from my first desk Matt built me. I knew the grain would show, even after primer, but I love it. It’s different and textural, and it was free.
Any simple additions to your house lately?
One last thing….Are you getting ready for the Christmas Challenge of Style Feature Saturday tomorrow???
Since we’re celebrating 1,000 followers and 2,000 subscribers around here pretty soon, this little challenge will be my Christmas and THANK YOU present to you guys. The winner will receive a bundle of goodies that I love to keep on hand….think Purdy, Krylon, Wagner, and I’m also throwing in some fun small things from me to you.
I won’t be posting favorites from last week (I’m still looking through them…79 entries….so wonderful!), since I’m sure some of the same Christmas projects will be linked up. There’s no limit as to how many projects you can share, just be sure to add you’re headed over here for a challenge so others can link up, too.
Ashley from Pure + Lovely will be the guest judge….she KNOWS how to Christmas.
Prizes revealed tomorrow….and I’m getting too excited….we may have to include some additional winners.
🙂
Link opens at 3 pm.
Can’t wait to see you tomorrow!!
LOVE your chalkboard idea! And your christmas tree! So cute!
I, too, have “a thing” about chalkboards, but I noticed the sampler(?) on the wall and I was able to read some of it but not all of its. Soooo, when you get through all your Christmas fun, would you be willing to send me a photo of it?? I would appreciate it so much, as I am also a sampler collector, and yours looks very interesting!
Many thanks in advance,
Carol
That is such a great place to hang a chalkboard! The children will have great memories of drawing while you cook.
Wow! I have been trying to figure out how to make a temporary island out of a big old dresser on wheels… I even bought the new Romantic Homes to get some ideas… then, this morning, I saw your chalkboard idea and it is perfect for the back of the dresser to make it look less like a dresser! YAY. I will post on it when done and show you how it turned out. Thanks for your great blog.
Hi Shaunna-
love this – i am redoing an old dresser for my grandma for christmas (tunring it in to an island) and decided yesterday that i was going to paint chalkboard on the back of it for all the little grandkids to draw on – so its too funny that you post this!!
I'm definitely linking up and I can't wait to see what everyone else had going on. Your chalkboard project is awesome!!!!
What a great idea to put a chalkboard in the island! I would have LOVED this when my kiddos were younger.
Love your chalkboard. Quick question for you…I have those same Ikea wall hanging storage bins…do yours leave marks on your wall? i love them, but not the marks!
i love then myself i painted my kids bedroom doors with them and in my kitchen! my hub thinks i"m crazy! more to go!!
we had an island in our last house in louisiana that was hideously wallpapered on its backside when we bought the house. i removed the paper and added chalkboard paint, and when sawyer was a baby he could draw there while i made dinner… it was a perfect height for him! i think it looks fabulous, and i love the graining!
looove that chalkboard- grain and all!
I really like the caulkboard framed like that! I made one but used a old enamel sheet cake pan.
I can't get enough chalkboard paint! I just did a wall in my kitchen to try to cure my addiction…it worked. I'm good now. Your island chalkboard is awesome…I love the wood grain showing through too.
Fabulous, how the grain shows on the chalkboard. That just adds to the character!!
Great idea – it's the perfect place. I'm always telling my kids "other side of the counter" when I'm cooking. this would give them something to do over there!
LOVE it! Really love where you placed it. 🙂
It's definitely the year of the chalkboard, Shaunna! 🙂 They're so much fun, aren't they? And just great for the little kiddos! Yours turned out just perfect – and I love the size! I'm on the lookout for a large one to prop up on my buffet table….. :)
chalkboards are on the brains of all of us I think!! Can't get enough of them!
I just found your site and LOVE the chalkboard!! I have some and just adore them in my home!!
TFS!!
Where did you get the frame for this project? I love it!
so a few days ago I managed to be an accessory in one of my larger mirrors suicide! and now I can’t bring myself to just throw out the frame…and I LOVE this idea…so my question is; what type of wood is it that you used? 1/2inch, 1/4inch plywood? veneer paneling?
