The color, that is.
It’s time for another furniture redo…the rockstar buffet sold pretty quickly at Troy Antiques, and so did some other large pieces, so it was time to go shopping!
When I stumbled on to this piece in Dothan (Alabama) at Old South Antiques, I knew I had to have it. It reminded me a lot of our own antique buffet (and it’s also why I styled it right there). The piece seemed to be an antique–but the art deco touches on the front have me perplexed.
I need to do some research and find out more about it…if you have any ideas, let me know!
You can see the before wasn’t necessarily wrong, but it wasn’t necessarily right, either.
I’m COMPLETELY digging it, now.
I painted it with Chalk Paint ™ in Duck Egg (one of my favorites) and highlighted with Old White.
I adored the original mother of pearl handles–so beautiful, so they stayed.
The cabinet has a really cool structure, too. I love the locking hardware on the inside…have I told you locks on furniture make me feel like I’m inside a C.S. Lewis novel??
Or maybe that I’m hanging with Robert Downey, Jr., err Sherlock Holmes?
The inside was in good shape, so Anna Lauson helped me paint the insides of the drawers/doors, and just the trim on the shelves.
I happily left the top as is–and I have to say, this is one of my favorites….and I’ve painted a lot of furniture. It’s just groovy.
You know what I mean, baby??

Love the duck egg blue (it is my favorite ASCP) color and those mother pearl handles are lovely. I’ve never seen those on a piece of furniture. Great work!
Beautiful Shaunna!

What a sweet piece with lots of potential uses. This is a cabinet you could have forever and just let it move throughout your home. I love it. What a nice job. It’s definitely a keeper.
beautiful!
Turned out great. Inspires me to start painting my furniture again!
Wonderful! Makes all things new again!
Love it! Love the color, love the style…great job {again!}
Dear Shaunna,
Did I tell you your house is an inspiration for mine?
I believe so. I love your rooms, specially the dining room.
I saw you on Nate for the first time and you opened a new world for me!
I love Duck Egg Blue. too This is such an unique piece, yes. it looks retro! but I never saw these pullers before! I loved how you highlighted the details in white.
Have a great weekend!
You are an inspiration, and I want to let you know that I am right on the verge of painting my dining room table. It’s a pine trestle that was finished with a glossy black when I bought it. It’s so terribly scratched and in need of chalk painting. I am just really frightened to ruin my table, even though I know it will look so much better. With chalk paint I can embrace the scratches instead of being ashamed of them. Any words of encouragement to help me take the plunge?
Susan, what a kind thing to say. Words? JUST DO IT!!! 😀 And yes, with chalk paint, you’ll be able to embrace imperfections and they’ll be a part of what makes your piece art.

Besides the color, this piece is a different look than your usual, and I admire your willingness to take a risk with the retro feel. You do a wonderful job dry brushing white highlights, a technique I’ve yet to try. Always love your site!
Thanks Jaimee!

Loved this post, please link it with me tomorrow at Wow Us Wednesday!
Absolutely beautiful! I LOVE the style of this piece…and the handles? Get outta here! Great job!!
Hi Shauna, I’ve been following you a bit via Centsational Girl, and now that I’ve attended an ASCP workshop, I’ll be addicted to your blog as well!!! I love this piece.
Quick question: You mentioned highlighting with Old White. Did you paint the entire piece 2 coats of Duck Egg and then a Clear Wax, and then a Clear Wax / Old White mixture? That’s my guess… or maybe you do not give away your secrets? 🙂
I purchased an old corner vanity from an estate sale and overpaid for it. It is so ugly but I know it will be a beauty very soon. Thanks!!!!
Love what you did. I am just starting my first project with chalk paint. My husband and I found an fireplace mantel from a farmhouse in the late 1800 hundreds. EXCITED AND SCARED ABOUT THE THE RIGHT COLOR. I also love the Duck Egg.
Thank you!
What brand is the Duck Egg shade so I can get a match?
Beautiful! What brand of chalk paint did you use?
Hi there Alianne!
We use Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan. 🙂
