Hey there- Layla from The Lettered Cottage here!
Shaunna should be home any time now, and just like I know you are, I’m anxious to hear about the work she and Matt did in Honduras. I’m sure it was quite an experience, and Kev and I really hope to go down with them on a future trip.
Once she gets home, and has some time to hang out, I’m going to see if she’ll meet me for lunch one day so we can catch up. I also want to take her to a new flea market in our area.
It’s called Prattville Pickers and it. Is. Awesome!
How did we not know about this place? It’s only five minutes from our house!
Kev and I had an absolute blast wandering around in there last weekend. There were SO many booths full of previously-loved goodies to explore! Kev couldn’t resist strummin’ a little ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ on this pretty blue guitar…
And I couldn’t resist bringing home this vintage tobacco basket…
It’s ginormous, and in pretty good condition…
I love the red and white around the edge…
It reads, Huntington Tobacco Co. 1626.
I did a little research online, and I think the company was located in West Virginia, inside this building…
And although I’m not a huge fan of tobacco, man I’m a sucker for old, odd-shaped baskets!
We plan to hang ours on the planked wall in the room we’re going to use as our home office…
Kev and I need to shoot various items up against that wall from time to time, so we thought one big thing (vs. lots of little frames like we used to have) would be both eye-catching and easy to take down when we need to.
That big ol’ basket should do the trick, don’tcha think?
I love that basket. I would love to have one, my dad is a farmer….wonder if they have a really old one laying around 🙂 Might have to do some snooping around!
My parents have had that exact basket hanging over their bed for years! I let out a chuckle when I saw it in this post. It is a good find and I hope you find a great and beautiful place for it!
Amanda
Love your basket! I have one that my sister gave me 26 years ago. It was in our first apartment and now adorns the wall at our lake place. It used to be our bulletin board with postcards, photos, Christmas cards stuck between the slats. Just looked at mine and it says (very faintly) Seal & Dixon 5043. May have to investigate. Enjoy your find…know you’ll find many more!!!
What luck you had in finding that basket! I would love one for my fireplace mantle! Huntington is indeed in West Virginia, not far from the capital, Charleston. My sister lived in that neck of the woods for awhile.
Blessings…
hi Layla…I’ve been following you and Kevin for a while now. i love everything you guys do. i think the basket will be great for the wall. being the only object on the wall will highlight the beauty and texture of the basket. plus it will be so easy to remove and put back when you need to.
Love that basket and that you found a great new place to hunt for treasures. Looking forward to seeing that in your office!
Love the plank wall, Love the basket. Love your blog.
OK, you need to email me the address of this place since I’m in Auburn and you gave me something to do with my weekend next week! BTW, have you been to the Eastbrook Flea Market/Antique Mall in Montgomery yet? We are talking 3 HUGE floors of heaven my dear. I spent over 3 hours in there one day, sans kids and STILL couldn’t get through all the stuff. I go often since the hubs works close by as an acupuncturist. It’s my home away from home, LOL1
But seriously….. email me that address to Prattville Pickers because I can’t seem to locate it on Google with all my savvy computer expertise :-/
616 Hwy 82 bypass in Prattville, just past the County Club and minutes off Interstate 65!
Hey Carolyn!
I’m not sure of the exact address, but I do know it’s on Hwy. 82. I know they have a Facebook page, so maybe you can send them a message that way and find out. ?
And I used to have a booth on the lower level at Eastbrook, back in 2004. What a ball that was! LOVE that place!
😀
We are headed to Prattville Pickers today…Can’t wait to check it out!!! Love the basket you scored there…..
Hi guys,
Looks like you two had a great time not to mention that “great find” of a tobacco basket.
Love the basket and can’t wait to check out the new place! Prattville Pickers will definitely be on our junkin’ road!!
Blessings!
I love the basket. I am from WV and I just wanted to point out that WV didn’t technically exist in 1626. So while that building may be in WV now, back then it would have probably been Virginia. I’m not even 100% sure when VA became a state. WV didn’t become a state until 1863.
Just a couple of weeks ago I bought a tobacco basket at our local antique mall here in Virginia. It’s from the same company!. Huntington Tobacco Co. I recognized that edging right away, but I hadn’t done any research on the company.
I always think it’s funny how small the world is. If I ever go visit my aunt and uncle I’ll have to go to that flea market – they live in Prattville!
Hey Erin! I probably should have clarified: I think “1626” was actually part of the company number. The tobacco company I researched wasn’t created ’til much later than that date. 🙂
Found your blog while searching for tobacco baskets in Alabama, I already knew there was a place up in Athens that has some and I was considering making the drive but NO WAY! you found one right here in Prattville! Please tell me that wasn’t the only one! I might have to make a trip to Prattville Pickers today. . .
Eeeek! I found one! I walked the whole store and was getting ready to leave and I spotted it! Awesome! Also, the number on this one is 3994 so it must just be how they labeled them. I’m giving you an internet high five for indirectly helping me find one! Yay!
Wow!!! I got to go there! Antiques are dried up down here is lower Alabama. Looks like my husband & I need to do a road trip north. That second photo would totally be us. :-O
Hi Layla,
I am a great big fan of yall’s… Just have a questions about the framed wall in the bedroom that you are redoing into an office. I have always wanted to somehow create one of those frames that has the picture in the center but you can see the wall through the glass. Can you tell me how to do that or will I have to break down and just buy one? Thanks..
Oh I forgot to tell ya, that I live in L.A. (Lower Alabama) Panhandle of Florida, in Freeport.
My daughter, Jessica, lives in Millbrook, not far from Prattville. We are gonna check it out in a couple weeks. Thanks for letting us know about this great big ole Antique Mall… Can’t wait!!!!!
I’m in love with that tobacco basket! We live in an old tobacco warehouse and I’m trying to find some to decorate the apartment!
