I’m not sure if you guys noticed, but I tend to be somewhat of a copycat. I am not embarrased in the slightest to look at something, especially something’s from the Barn, and copy it shamelessly.
In all my thrifting for PI restoration and for our home addition, lamps have definitely been on the list. We need one downstairs, and a couple upstairs….one for my writing room and one for the kids’ playroom–or maybe several for each.
When looking at inspiration photos, I came across this one from Pottery Barn:
Price: $100 just for the base, no shade included. I didn’t spend that on Darla!!
So when I ran across this…..
priced at $5, I grabbed it and clung to it for dear life. I loved the lines and could immediately see the look I was going for…I didn’t want it as chippy as pb’s version, but you guessed it, white and distressed.
While I was painting a table, I used my wagner sprayer to paint a couple of coats on the lamp…solid wood, by the way. So unique.
I’m always getting questions about my painting techniques( if you have a specific or time sensitive question, shoot me an email :), and here’s one thing I can say about glazing. If I am distressing, which I most always am doing, I always distress, then glaze. Different people do it different ways. To me, the glaze brings out the details of each distress “mark” and heightens the depth of color and pattern to each one. Just my opinion, though.
So, the same with the lamp. After roughly sanding with a fine/medium sanding block, two coats of white, and distressing (with same block), I glazed it with Valspar’s Antiquing Glaze.
Ideally, I wanted a “grey-er” white, so this was a little brown for me, but I worked with what I had….I probably didn’t use 3 teaspoons of glaze on the whole lamp.
Here’s how it turned out…..
I LOVE the finish.
I’m not sure I’m sold on the shade…love the drum shape, but I wanted white and couldn’t find one. I’ll probably keep looking (we live in a pretty small town, so local options are limited), but this will surely do for now.
Love these old ledgers I got for .25.
Here’s to turning trash to treasure.

You did an excellent job on that lamp. Looks better than the PB one.
I am LOVING that lamp. I have two silver-ish iron lamps that I am going to spray paint heirloom white and glaze. They'd look so much cuter like that. Thanks for the inspiration!!
What an awesome idea…luv the outcome:) Hope you have a FUN week!
I love the lamp you did a great job….Kathy
I love how it came out! Don't you love finding solid wood pieces?
Great job! It looks better than the PB one at a much more reasonable price! Love it!
way cuter than the PB one for sure!
Wow it turned out great!
Oh baby I am going to paint some of my ugly old lamps now! I've been planning on it for a while, but I haven't made myself get around to it. You've inspired me. LOL!
Another great transformation! I love lamps but they are in short supply in our house, almost nonexistent. And I'm not sure why that is. Thanks for sharing.
It's great Shaunna. I love the rustic chunky wood feel to it.
love it! i am PB junkie too but don't like the prices. love the shade…how about covering it with a patterned fabric?
It turned out great! Thank you for showing how you make it distressed.
It turned out great….I love the ledgers too – how cool!!
What a gorgeous lamp! And I love those ledgers, too. They are really unique and old and just plain charming. Linda
So pretty, I love the finish. Thanks for linking up!
It's lovely! Love the chunky shape and the distressing.
I look at your projects and just laugh and shake my head. You sure know how to do a transformation! Thank you for sharing your latest on the boardwalk Bragfest
Perfect! It turned out awesome! Love the ledger paper too! Theresa
Love yours more! Thanks for linkin up to the POPP.
Love the lamp Shaunna. So wish we lived closer. I would love to learn to do stuff like this. 🙂
Is it ok to say that I am perfectly/imperfectly in LOVE with you now! Thank you for the great idea and the directions to boot. Great job on this piece!
Those ledgers are exactly the same type that my great, grandfather used. I have to ask..do they have the last name of Frisbee in them? You just never know, and I believe it never hurts to ask. I really was looking at that lamp. I need to find a replacement soon, and this one caught my eye. Thank you for the directions. Love your site!
I heart PB, but mostly find myself day-dreaming over pieces in the catalog, never wanting to fork out the dough! But seriously, your lamp is SO MUCH cuter than this PB lamp! I LOVE, love it!
Thanks for sharing,
