I miss when Instagram was real stuff like this. So here’s where it’s at. Playing rummikub with the tripod on standby for any kid who wants to remote in. Taking care of each other this week; it is our highest work, always, but some times are for dropping everything else & waking up all night, playing games via face time & letting the rest of the world fall away.

I wrote this for my friend, Michael @inspiredbycharm as I was working on a painting for him…he’s the world to me, and I wanted to share it with you, too. These are words for us all.

We get so caught up in taking care of our people, so caught up in what is right in front of our faces reminding us what we “should be doing” or where “we should be going." There is almost zero time to pause, reflect, and to trust our own knowing.

Sometimes the way the world moves is not our way. Sometimes we need to take a moment, breathe in, trust ourselves, and move in our own direction.

Folks...I literally cannot describe how excited I am for our @thecreativeexponent Creative Retreat in October. About a year after my divorce, the kids and I drove to Nashville to visit my brother. I remembered the first vacation I had taken with them, alone, and how empty it felt. I loved being with them, and I loved our moments together, but what was gone was another presence in the room. It was palpable.⁣
⁣
This trip, though, felt good. We had settled into routines, and our normal had become ours. We had little inside jokes, and lots of cuddles, and plenty of tears and our little world that we each built became ridiculously vulnerable and fulfilling.⁣
⁣
On this particular weekend getaway, I was listening to an audiobook on our five hour drive. The reader of The Four Agreements pumped beautiful, thoughtful words into the car, and after a little while, one kid device, then two, was shut off.⁣
⁣
All ears were on the truth floating in the air between us.⁣
⁣
If you haven’t read it, the premise behind the book is this: in the unfolding of you, there are agreements made for you by the universe and the people around you. As you age, and as you seek your own path, and find God in you, all that is really left to do is to break those agreements and make the four agreements with yourself that really matter: Don’t Take Anything Personally, Don’t Make Assumptions, Always Do Your Best, and Be Impeccable With Your Word.⁣

During a lot of my time in therapy, I began to discern how words were used as weapons or used as gifts. Either a tool or weapon. A tool to heal, or a weapon to win.⁣
⁣
And guess what? When we learn to use our words about ourselves as tools for healing, it empowers us to approach those we love with that pure magic. With the intent of healing instead of the agenda of winning.⁣

It’s early morning, and with a scalding cup of c

It’s early morning, and with a scalding cup of coffee, I step into my studio.

I should’ve cleaned up the palette last night. My first thought is fleeting; almost instantaneously I smile at the scattered tools, and my hands itch to get over there in that mess.

I should hurry up and shoot the studio/office so I can share it on the blog. Why though? Who says so? It’s not quite finished and I don’t want to rush the process so this room can possibly get featured here or there or be done already.

Too many people talking about what to do and where to go. Must listen to myself. The studio will get finished in my own time.

The space is white and bright, with soft white walls and natural oak floors, the only stark moments in the room the black trim surrounding the two windows. There is one single 60×60 canvas I painted on the opposite wall of the doors.

My dizziness is somewhat better today, although when I sit in the chair for ten plus minutes, it is back and I feel the rocking and swaying begin. I’ve been dealing with it now for over a month. The days are filled with doctor visits and therapy to try to ward off a rather scary surgery.

What if I have to have surgery? How long would I have to walk past this room without picking up a paintbrush or placing my fingers on the keys? It scares me. The thought scares me. What if something breaks? What if they fix my spine but ruin my painting? My writing?
I look away from the computer and my story.

The answer comes to me.

During this odd season, my body is needing serious

During this odd season, my body is needing serious rest & attention. Is that as hard for you as it is for me?? I have painted once in the last two + weeks and written once. I miss my work, and my rhythms, and my hands itch to create something. So does my mind.

But what if these seasons could serve a purpose for thinking, planning, dreaming, reenergizing? Re-emerging as something more equipped, more prepared, more listened to?

What if your body needs a dang break? Even from work (or life) you love? These seasons remind me how fragile life is, and how we really are just muddling through.

How we can give ourselves so much if we’d only stop hoping for the world to give it to us.

Rest, peace, comfort, joy, love.

It’s all within you my darling. Trust that it is there. 😘

“You are the wild onion.” He said it matter of factly, and I almost did not realize he was talking to me. “What?,” I asked.

My husband put the towel he was using to dry the dishes on the counter, and looked at me, half smiling. “You tend to be the wild onion. You grow off by yourself over there. You’re the one sticking out. Don’t try to be anything else.”

I snorted, and laughed at his words, but they struck me. He tends to do that. Keeps me in between a place of ease and itchy awakening.

We were talking about business and life, and how I approach both. You tend to be the wild onion. Don’t try to be anything else.

He and I are dreaming big things together this morning, in this grey house surrounded by tropical storm rains.

We tend to be the wild onions. I bet, if you are here, you do too.
