Remember that wacky shopping trip I took with a shady lady?
The one where I found this beauty??
I couldn’t wait to get started on this one. I loved the turned-leg style and everything was in pretty good shape (other than the obvious damage to the top).
I envisioned bringing some fresh farmhouse to this once formal table…
No seriously staged photos for this one, guys…had to snap a picture of it in the window at Troy Antiques.
I stripped the top twice with SmartStrip paint remover, to bring out the natural wood….I loved it! There was just enough old water stains that made me choose to slightly dry brush a little white here and there on the top. I then sealed it with two coats of Wipe-On Poly in a Satin finish.
The legs got two coats of Old White and some serious distressing. They were sealed with some clear wax.
I’m finishing up the chairs today and tomorrow, and let me tell you, it was hard to get rid of this set. (it will soon be heading to a new home.) The contrast between the white legs and the natural top made me swoon–literally.
It still even had all the original hardware (as you can see on the end of the table in this pic) that pulled the leaf out from under the table, all working in beautiful condition. It was just a bit too small for the dining room, so we are letting it go.
It’s been my favorite piece to date. Period.
I also finished up this mirror…I love this thing! I painted it straight over the dark wood with Paris Gray and really fell in love with it.
Just look how lovely it distressed…another hard one to let go.
That seems to be a pattern for me these days.

Gorgeous table! Your posts are so inspiring!
Thank you SO much for that…it means the world to me to hear that! Just little ole me. 🙂

They both are so pretty. I know what you mean about letting go of your favorite creations, that is so hard for me too.
It is hard! Thanks so much!

Ooh, lovely! I have a table almost identical to yours that is in the que for a makeover. Now I can hardly wait to get started. Thanks for such inspiration…continuously! Wish I had more of your energy, and as we say in Nebraska, “get ‘er done”.
I love that you said, “in the queue!!” A queue for the furniture…if that’s not the truth. And I don’t feel like I get er done near enough, so no worries on that. 😀

Absolutely love your pieces. I used to love to do stuff like this. I found your blog from My Blessed Life. Hope you can stop by and visit. Hope all is well in that part of the country. God Bless
THank you so much, Shelley! You are from Alabama?? I’ll stop by soon! Thanks so much for coming by!

I love how this table turned out. I did have a question that’s been bugging me for the last couple of days: the books you use seem to be old books that have the covers torn off. Am I wrong in that respect? If so, what books are they? How do you choose them?
I ask because I’m an avid reader, and the thought of tearing off a book cover “for looks” just appalls me – I could never do it 🙂 (No, I’m not saying you’re a bad girl for doing so – just that *I* can’t!) I’m getting ready to take on the challenge of redoing my whole house – one room ata time – and for my little girl’s room, I love the look of those kinds of old books tied together with twine. But I’d hate to not pay attention to what books I used – so I was wondering how you decided? Do you just grab old books at local yard sales and use them for looks only?
Anyway, sorry for taking it off-topic, but I saw you using that idea on this table, and I’ve really been wanting to ask someone! 🙂
Hey Shelly, you’re comment made me laugh so hard. I’m actually an avid reader as well (former English teacher), and it does kind of pain me to rip covers off of books just for looks. But…I do, I guess. 🙂 I usually look for old books in poor condition that the average person won’t pick up. I guess I’m getting tougher skin. 🙂
Here’s to some good summer reading!!

I love that table, I think the redo is perfect and that mirror is gorgeous too. I was stalking a similar mirror at Goodwill waiting for half price day it was gone when I went back for it, boo hoo.
THanks so much Karen!!

OMG, I love everything you do! I purchased your e-book and it will be my “other” bible for quite sometime, LOL! I was wondering if you and others would mind giving me your opinion on a desk I’m working on. My first piece to paint with Annie Sloan chalk paint. And first time ever using wax. Please tell me if I need to remove more dark, and yes, if you insist, I will distress it 🙂 Thank you so much!
Oops, operation-home.blogspot.com
Thanks!
Thank YOU, Edna!! What a sweet thing to say. Sure, send me a pic on over and let me see the desk!

I bought a table so similar and went black. I like it, but I love yours. Wish I had seen this first!!!

Oh wow! I LOVE that table!
Question – why didn’t you wax the top? Is wax only to be used over paint?
One more question – MY husband is building me a farmhouse table this summer. If I want to paint it white, but want to distress it and have the wood showing through would I need to stain the wood first and then paint over it? Obviously I don’t want raw wood showing through when I distress. It seems like staining first would be the only way to achieve the look I want, but I wanted to ask a pro because I really have no clue what I’m doing! 🙂 Thanks Shaunna!
Thanks Alima! You can definitely use wax on wood…i had a time crunch and it takes the wax a little longer to cure for a top (because I put more on). And yes, if you don’t want raw wood to show through, stain that sucker first! 🙂
shaunna
Awesome! Thanks!
That table looks so beautiful! Great job…just lovin’ that chalk paint!
Thanks Renee!

LOVE!!
THanks SO much!

That looks just beautiful. Inteestingly, my mother’s dining room table looked pretty much identical to this one; chairs slightly different. My daughter has it now and I’m going to show this to her (not that she listens to me-LOL!) But would this ever lighten it up and show it off. Love what you did with it!
That’s so neat, Dorothy! And wonderful you guys have been able to keep it in your family! Let me know if she takes the plunge!
🙂

Love it!! I have one like it, and I spent so many hours getting the green, and then black, and then the white – yes, three coats – paint off of the legs, that I put it back in the corner and haven’t looked at it since. AND when I stripped the top it became very “splotchy” if you know what I mean. This post was almost like an intervention – and now I am ready to work on her again. Thank you!! I needed that!!
That’s crazy, Becky!! You do have to walk away from projects like that sometimes…here’s to motivation for getting started again!
🙂

I found a table almost exactly like this at goodwill!!! I absolutely love it and am currently using it as my kitchen island. Your blog is fab!!
Aw, thanks Rhonda!!! It is a great table…hope you’re enjoying yours!

Thank you Crystal! Hope you enjoy it!!

I love your table!! Can I ask what you’re selling it for???? Maybe I’ll have to make a trip to Troy, AL…. lol I went to Leesburg, Va to buy a chair from the lovely Miss Mustard Seed! Take care, keep up the great work.
Thanks, Lisa! Wow, what a compliment! It’s already sold, I’m afraid. 🙁 Thanks for the wonderful compliment, though!
🙂
shaunna
Can I ask what you sold it for?! It sure is beautiful!!
Sure, Lisa! The table and four chairs were $475, and the buffet sold for $345. Hope that helps!

Beautiful! Is Old White Annie Sloane paint? If not, do you use semi gloss or satin or flat? I ordered your ebook awhile back and love it! I just don’t see in there if you mention the types of paint that you use, ie flat, satin, semi. I’m still trying to make my furniture look as gorgeous as yours does. Thanks!!
What a big difference it looks from before and after, the table looks very classy and new now!
Oh my… I love the table!! If it were a bit longer, I would be taking a road trip today 🙂
