I’m not sure if you guys noticed, but I tend to be somewhat of a copycat.  I am not embarrased in the slightest to look at something, especially something’s from the Barn, and copy it shamelessly.
In all my thrifting for PI restoration and for our home addition, lamps have definitely been on the list.  We need one downstairs, and a couple upstairs….one for my writing room and one for the kids’ playroom–or maybe several for each.
When looking at inspiration photos, I came across this one from Pottery Barn:

Price: $100 just for the base, no shade included.  I didn’t spend that on Darla!!
So when I ran across this…..
priced at $5, I grabbed it and clung to it for dear life.  I loved the lines and could immediately see the look I was going for…I didn’t want it as chippy as pb’s version, but you guessed it, white and distressed.
While I was painting a table, I used my wagner sprayer to paint a couple of coats on the lamp…solid wood, by the way.  So unique.
I’m always getting questions about my painting techniques( if you have a specific or time sensitive question, shoot me an email :), and here’s one thing I can say about glazing.  If I am distressing, which I most always am doing, I always distress, then glaze. Different people do it different ways.  To me, the glaze brings out the details of each distress “mark” and heightens the depth of color and pattern to each one.  Just my opinion, though.
So, the same with the lamp.  After roughly sanding with a fine/medium sanding block, two coats of white, and distressing (with same block), I glazed it with Valspar’s Antiquing Glaze.
Ideally, I wanted a “grey-er” white, so this was a little brown for me, but I worked with what I had….I probably didn’t use 3 teaspoons of glaze on the whole lamp.
Here’s how it turned out…..
I LOVE the finish.
I’m not sure I’m sold on the shade…love the drum shape, but I wanted white and couldn’t find one.  I’ll probably keep looking (we live in a pretty small town, so local options are limited), but this will surely do for now.
Love these old ledgers I got for .25.
Here’s to turning trash to treasure.
